The Higginson Tower is located close to St. John the Apostle Anglican Church (the church on the hill along Highway 34 as you enter Vankleek Hill from the north end). The ruins were owned by Phil Arber, who also owns Arbor Gallery, once the home of Lieutenant Thomas Higginson, who built the wind-powered grist mill in 1832. William Higginson, son of Thomas, added the upper portion to create a conservatory and also built the red brick house nearby, now home to Arbor Gallery. Come to the Farmers' Market every Saturday (9am - 1pm), year around, for fresh, local produce and crafts. Summer: VCI parking lot. Watch for our white tents in the parking lot, beside Highway 34 Winter: VCI gym. Entrance directly to the right of the main doors. Starting July 3 we will relocate to the lot between Mike Dean's and The Snack Shack. This is due to VCI being declared a construction site for the summer and we will be back at the new and improved VCI eventually. Meanwhile, we are extremely grateful to Siversky Enterprises for the use of the land and to Luc and Kathy of The Snack Shack for allowing us to use their parking lot and supplying us with water and electricity. Thanks also to Mike Dean's for allowing us access. This yet again proves that this is a great community which can pull together under any circumstance. (www.vankleekhillfarmersmarket.ca) |
